Most people put off seeing a shrink or mental health professional for months or years while hoping that their stress will go away on its own. The decision to get professional help can be difficult one. However, keep in mind that the initial nervousness that you may feel when coming to see a mental health provider, is normal. It is merely a part of the process. Often, a first timer may feel that it is necessary to tell the shrink everything that may be going on currently and everything that has ever happened in the past. Please know that you will NOT be pressured to talk about things that you are not ready to talk about. Many first- timers find it helpful to bring a close family member, significant- other, or close friend to their appointment with them to provide extra support. Please know that any discussion with a loved one will be at the end of your visit, with you in the room and only with your permission. You should expect your first appointment to last at least one hour and possibly slightly longer depending on your number of questions. Depending on your comfort level and the types of symptoms you are having, you will be offered various types of ongoing talk therapy and or medication. Medication may be recommended if it is likely to help your symptoms resolve quickly or move you safely to a more calm state of mind. Please know that you will not be forced to take medication here.
Prior to your first visit, you will need to come to the office on a Monday and complete paper work. The paper work will help you understand our office processes and introduce you to me. If you will be using your health insurance, we will ask that you complete a special form using your cell phone to call your insurance company. We have found that this form helps everyone understand their insurance benefits .
